7 Easy Preschool Sensory Activities

Learning through play has to be the most healthiest, nurturing way for your children to grow. Learning through play quite literally helps with the development of their brain. I read an article from TheirWorld.org, and I felt very moved to share a section:

“This is when the most significant brain development happens, particularly in the first two years of life. Lack of play and communication, known as "under-stimulation", can have long-term negative consequences on a child’s learning and physical and mental health.

Roughly 80% of brain development is completed by age three and 90 % by age five. This means a child cannot wait for primary school for learning to begin.” (more on the article here)

If you read my last post on How To Affordably and Successfully Homeschool Your Preschooler, you need to! I chat more ways on sensory play, how to get all the materials + books cheap, and discussing it doesn't have to be a huge financial investment.

We have some tried and true tips, tricks, and activities to share! I bet you have everything you need in your pantry, or you can find them at the dollar store.

  1. Moon Sand Recipe (only 2 ingredients!)

This is absolutely an outdoor activity, or an activity that you would place an old shower curtain down for! It helps a ton with cleaning up if you are using some sort of plastic sheet.

2. Food Sensory Play

So, we had an apple tree that had severely bruised apples laying at the bottom, waiting to be picked!

We grabbed some spaghetti noodles, penne noodles, raisins, apples, and some extra muffin papers.

The raisins and muffin papers were just there as extras to practice counting, and a new texture!

  1. We stabbed the spaghetti noodles into the apples. You can use wooden skewers, which I have done in the past.

  2. Show your child once how the noodles fit on the stick, and they learn eye hand co-ordination, balance, and patience!

3. There is a recipe I found for 3 ingredient fluffy slime! “This slime is stretchy, fluffy, clean to clean up and a complete sensory delight.”

4. Baking

Not only is this really good for learning how to count when adding in ingredients, the experience of baking is something that is a staple to childhood!

I loved baking cakes with my grandma growing up, and I had some of my best memories with her because of this.

We typically freeze a lot for unexpected guest, last minute snacks for the car, or we simply deliver some to our neighbours!

We try extra hard to make sure we learn colours, counting, let their hands get dirt, and taste test!

5. I found a recipe for 2 Ingredient Cloud Dough! Cloud dough is extremely similar to play dough, but it doesn’t last quite as long. It is extremely soft!

6. Good, Old Fashioned Art

Sometimes we get way out there trying to create sensory activities! Sometimes taping paper down to a table, leaving a handful of crayons on the table for them while you do the dishes is enough!

I know you were probably expecting something more elaborate, but occasionally it can keep them entertained for longer than you think.

My favourite thing to do after we doodle is use paint later in the day and layer artwork, then frame it!

7. This is our fool proof play dough recipe that is easy to multiply for the smallest or biggest batches you heart desires!

Whenever you feel discouraged, just remember, you are the centre of the universe to those tiny humans you made from scratch. You’re kind of a big deal!

Learning from home has created a bond with my children that has become strengthened. I we have had to learn more about each other and deepen our understanding about each other, which truly have been an amazing gift.
